Four Stories To Help You Think Outside The Box

The following four stories are based on a short blog that I wrote – and then rewrote using AI ghostwriters. I've been working on a method for systematically evaluating anyone's writing style based on a sample page. I can then create a ghostwriter that can write in that style via dictation. I chose a few of my favorite authors to explore the range.

The Self-imposed Framework of Limitation

By Briscoe Pelkey’s Ghost (based on a sample analysis of The Amazing Power of Design for Business)

In the vast tapestry of human cognition, a curious phenomenon is often observed: our self-imposed boundaries. As forward-thinking individuals, particularly in professional landscapes, we constantly strive to innovate. Yet, a closer examination reveals an inescapable pattern. Even as we stretch our mental horizons, we tend to unwittingly confine our thoughts within predefined parameters, much like placing an ocean within a bottle.

Decision-making, an art and science in itself, frequently toggles between two primary paradigms: the intuitive grasp, forged through accumulated experiences, and the structured approach driven by empirical data. These contrasting methodologies can be likened to the famed parable of the hare and the tortoise. Where intuition, much like the hare, relies on swift judgment and innate instincts, the data-driven mindset emulates the steady, deliberate pace of the tortoise, relying on tangible metrics to chart its course.

In this intricate dance of cognition, we discover two prominent thought pathways: business thinking and design thinking. Business thinking, akin to classical music, is methodical, structured, and finds solace in the predictable. It follows the established notes of past successes and avoids disruptive beats. Conversely, design thinking is the jazz improvisation of the cognitive world. It's spontaneous, user-centric, and not afraid to experiment with bold, innovative compositions.

Yet, amidst these structured thought paradigms, lies a tool often underutilized in corporate decision-making: imagination. During our formative years, imagination was the playground where anything was possible. However, as we transition into the professional realm, these expansive playgrounds often shrink, giving way to boardrooms and spreadsheets. But harnessing the power of imagination in business can lead to revolutionary ideas. It serves as a bridge between the known and the unknown, challenging the status quo and introducing fresh perspectives.

While our inherent thinking frameworks serve us well in many scenarios, it's pivotal to recognize their boundaries. By embracing tools like imagination and challenging our own limitations, we can truly unlock unparalleled innovation. Remember, in the quest for out-of-the-box solutions, it’s crucial first to recognize the box, especially when it's one of our own making.

You Are The Box

By Ernest Hemingway’s Ghost (based on sample analysis from A Farewell to Arms)

In the bustling marketplace of ideas, we often laud those who ‘think outside the box’. Yet, there’s an irony that lingers beneath this platitude. What if, in our quest for innovation, the box is not some external constraint, but rather, something within us?

For many, creativity is a vast ocean, punctuated by the occasional iceberg. The tip of that iceberg, visible and tangible, represents the ideas birthed by old habits. But submerged beneath, there's a depth of untapped potential. This vastness is where true innovation resides. But can one access it if they are unaware of their own encasing?

When steering the ship of decision-making, two polar stars often guide us: intuition—the gut feelings shaped by experiences—and data—the evidence illuminating our path forward. Much like a classic debate of art versus science, each has its merits. Yet, in juxtaposing the two, we stumble upon an interesting dichotomy: business thinking and design thinking.

Imagine a well-trodden path, lined with precise numbers and predictable outcomes. That's business thinking. It's the comforting hum of a song we’ve heard a thousand times. Yet, just beyond the tree line, there's the cacophony of a live orchestra, unpredictable and full of innovation. That’s design thinking. It not only embraces the user’s needs but also delves into holistic solutions. It understands that for a product to resonate, it must also reverberate.

However, the true juggernaut, often overlooked in corporate hallways, is imagination. Many of us, in our formative years, dined at the table of make-believe, crafting worlds with mere thoughts. As Picasso once mused, "Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when you grow up."

In the high-rises of business, playing it safe is often the tune. But let's pause and wonder: What if we allowed our imagination to pen the sheet music? What if, in between data points and bar graphs, we dreamt? Imagination, you see, isn't just child's play—it's the compass pointing to uncharted territories. A force, both brave and smart.

One must realize that sometimes, we are the box. Recognizing it is the first step. Transcending it? That's where the magic begins.

The Box That Traps The Mind

By HP Lovecraft’s Ghost (based on a sample analysis of The Dunwich Horror)

In the ancient corridors of forgotten knowledge, where shadows whisper secrets from bygone ages, there emerges a revelation most disconcerting. There exists not a simple box, as one might envisage, but rather an eldritch casket of our own creation, in which we've imprisoned our faculties of creation.

The dominion of decision, akin to the darkened woods where legends and fates entwine, finds itself guided by twin lanterns: one, the ephemeral glow of intuition, birthed from primordial experiences, and the other, the cold, unwavering luminescence of unyielding data. In this duality, there lies the ancient struggle of alchemy against the olden rituals; of business thinking against design thinking.

Picture, if you dare, a dark and endless moor, each step in its mire echoing with the precision of numbers and predictable outcomes—a realm governed by business thinking, fraught with the restless spirits of conventions past. Yet, lurking at its periphery, where the mists of uncertainty obscure vision, the cacophonous symphony of design thinking rises, enigmatic and ever-evolving, beckoning to those brave or mad enough to heed its call.

Amidst this eternal conflict, there exists a potent incantation lost to modernity but whispered in the annals of antiquity: imagination. In our fledgling years, as babes to the horrors of existence, we often danced with phantoms in realms conjured from mere thought. Alas, as the sands of time wore on, the ethereal veil between reality and fantasy thickened. Thus, in the monolithic temples of commerce, where safety and predictability reign supreme, the haunting refrains of imagination are oft dismissed as mere phantasms of a childish mind.

Yet, what profound revelations might we unveil, were we to channel the dark arts of imagination once more? Might we, ensnared within the confines of our own making, glimpse the eldritch truths that lie beyond? Verily, the realization dawns—that oftentimes, we are the very casket which binds our souls.

To recognize this chilling truth is but the initiation. To transcend these self-imposed shackles and to brave the unknown—that, dear reader, is where ancient horrors and unparalleled wonders intertwine.

The Magic Box We Wear

By Dr. Seuss’s Ghost (based on a simple analysis of Oh The Places You’ll Go)

In a world that's big and bright,

Full of dreams and starry night,

There's a thought that's quite profound,

About a box, round and round.

We all wear it, can't you see?

It’s our thoughts, as they can be.

Sometimes big, sometimes small,

It's the box that hides it all.

There's a path, straight and long,

Guided by a heart's sweet song.

Some choose logic, crisp and clear,

While others trust the whisper near.

Imagine paths, some wide, some thin,

Some with numbers, some with wind.

But every path, every twist,

Holds a secret, not to be missed.

Magic is real, not just in books,

It’s in our dreams, and the paths we took.

It’s not just wizards, wands, or sprites,

It’s in our choices, day and night.

So, when you think, “I can't, it's tough,”

Remember the box isn't rough.

Open it up, let dreams fly free,

For you’re the magic, as magic can be.
